“Funny how history repeats itself. Yahoo acquired eGroups in 2000 and inherited the web’s biggest collection of nasty porn.
Sidenote: eGroups’ Director of Business Development and Legal Affairs — responsible in part for evaluating the worst of the porn on the service — was Gaby Darbyshire. She was subsequently COO of Gawker Media.
After Yahoo clamped down on the worst of the content — the child porn especially — those publishers dispersed to platforms like Ning and later Tumblr. With the proposed acquisition of Tumblr, Yahoo will again be host to some of the most violent and transgressive porn on the web.
So my question is this: how many cycles of porn-fueled growth and failed acquisitions before blog platforms stop fooling themselves about the sources of traffic and Yahoo is finally put out of its misery?”
